At CoinMart, we provide you with detailed insights into your portfolio's performance, including how your tokens and overall wallet are performing. However, you may notice different percentages for your wallet’s profit and loss (P/L) and for individual tokens. This article explains how these percentages are calculated and why they may appear different.
Profit/Loss for Individual Tokens
When you click on a specific token in your wallet (e.g., WiF), you will see its personalised P/L based on your own trading activity, not just the market performance of the token.
- What you see: A percentage (e.g., -0.30%) showing how much your investment in this token has increased or decreased based on the price at which you bought it and any additional deposits or withdrawals you made.
- How it’s calculated:
- P/L for each token = (Current value of your holdings) - (Initial value of holdings + total deposits) - (Total value of withdrawals).
- We factor in all the times you bought, deposited, sold, or withdrew the token, giving you a personalised view of your token’s performance.
Example: Let’s say you bought €50 worth of WiF at a price of €100 per token and later bought another €50 worth of WiF when the price was €110. If the current market price of WiF is €108, you might see a slight loss in your P/L for WiF (e.g., -0.30%), even though the market price is close to your second purchase price.
Market Performance for Tokens
Sometimes, you’ll see a market performance percentage when trading or viewing a token (e.g., WiF +10%). This number refers to how the market price of the token has changed recently (usually over the last 24 hours).
- What you see: A percentage (e.g., +10%) showing how the token's market price has moved in a given timeframe (e.g., 24 hours).
- How it’s calculated:
- Market P/L for tokens = (Current market price - Price 24 hours ago) / (Price 24 hours ago) × 100
- This does not factor in your personalised trading activity. Instead, it shows how the token’s market price has changed overall.
Example:
If WiF’s price went from €100 to €110 in the last 24 hours, you’ll see +10% as the market performance. However, if you bought WiF at €110, your personalised P/L might still show a slight loss (e.g., -0.30%).
Overall Wallet Profit and Loss (P/L)
Your overall wallet P/L shows how all your assets (both fiat and tokens) are performing together. This includes all your tokens, fiat balances, and any changes due to market fluctuations, deposits, or withdrawals.
- What you see: A percentage (e.g., -7%) representing the profit or loss across your entire portfolio.
- How it’s calculated:
- Overall wallet P/L = (Current wallet balance - Wallet balance 24 hours ago) - (Net asset inflow over 24 hours).
- Net asset inflow includes any deposits (fiat or tokens) and withdrawals you made in the last 24 hours.
Example:
Even if WiF increased by +10%, if other tokens in your portfolio (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum) dropped in value or if you withdrew funds, your overall wallet P/L might show -7%, reflecting the total change across all assets.
Profit and Loss Percentages for the Whole Wallet
We also provide a percentage to show your total profit or loss as a percentage of your total portfolio value.
- How it’s calculated:
- P/L (%) for your wallet = (Profit/Loss for the wallet) / (Wallet balance 24 hours ago + Net asset inflow).
This percentage reflects your overall wallet’s performance relative to both your initial balance and any deposits or withdrawals made during the period.
Why Are These Percentages Different?
It's important to understand that different percentages reflect different types of calculations:
- Market Performance (e.g., +10%) shows how the market price of a specific token has changed.
- Personalised P/L (e.g., -0.30%) reflects how your individual holdings in a token have performed based on when you bought or deposited it.
- Overall Wallet P/L (e.g., -7%) considers all your assets together, including the impact of all tokens, fiat holdings, deposits, and withdrawals.
Each of these numbers provides you with valuable insight into different aspects of your portfolio and how your investments are performing.
